Beef Chilly (Daging Masak Cili)

Dear Readers,

Assalamualaikum and hello everyone. In this posting I am sharing a dish called Beef Chilly (Daging Masak Cili) which was taught to me by my aunt. For those of you who can't take too much chilly, you can reduce the amount. This dish is marvellous with briyani rice or buttered rice. I hope you will give it a try.

Here's the video.

Here's the recipe:

600gm beef (cut into small pieces)
1 litre coconut milk
20 pcs dried chilly (boil and blend with 1/2 cup water)
(this amount can be reduced and the seeds removed if you prefer a milder taste)
10 shallots (slice thinly)
1in ginger (slice thinly)
3 cloves garlic (slice thinly)
1/2 cup oil for frying
200gm kerisek (from 1 coconut, grate and roast until brown and grind)
1 cup tamarind juice
2 pcs cinamon stick
1 bowl of curry leaves
2tbs sugar
salt to taste

1) Heat the oil and fry the shallots until brown
2) Add in the ginger, cinamon and garlic.Stir for a minute.
3) Add the chilly paste and stir for a minute, and add in the curry leaves.Stir until the chilly is cooked.
4) Now we can add in the beef, coconut milk, kerisek, tamarind juice, sugar and salt to taste.
5) Simmer for 45mins to 1 hr.

Ready to serve.

So here we are past mid year 2011. Quite depressing so far. The news gets to me. Unrest, protest, fighting, oppression, famine, death..the list goes on. Ever feel like you don't want to know?... don't want to read nor watch the news.

They say ignorance is bliss.

Is it? Hatred and prejudices stem from ignorance. So is bigotry. To say that we live in an era where information is hard to come by is ridiculous. So what is the reason for the ignorance.

There is a saying that a hungry man is an angry man.

People are angry alright. The middle class is shrinking everywhere...not upward but down into the lower income strata. The unemployment rate is high and still climbing. Countries with natural resources are supposedly rich... no? So why do the people earn so little. The people in power are generally educated..some hold multiple qualifications from distinguished universities. So why is the economy so messed up.

But what gets to me most is the hypocrisy..the double standards. But who one does.......except those who suffer coz of this.

Till we meet again. Take care of yourself.
