Mixed Vegetables Nyonya Style/Chap Chye (Sayur Campur)


Assalamualaikum and hello dear friends,
Something simple and delightful from the Peranakan Chinese of the then Straits Settlements of Malaya.The dish is called Mixed Vegetables Nyonya Style/Chap Chye (Sayur Campur).

This dish was my mum's favourite vegetable dish for visiting relatives and friends. To her this dish is special and should be served to guests.I have added Brussels sprout to the dish. You can add your own favourite vegetables.

Mixed Vegetables Nyonya Style/Chap Chye (Sayur Campur)


500ml water
20-30 Brussels sprout (boil)
1 cup glass noodles (soaked in water)
1 cup shrimps (remove shells)
1 cup black fungus (soaked in water)
1 cup dried shitake mushrooms (soaked in mushrooms)
1 cup sheet soya bean curd/foo chook (soaked and cut into small pieces)
1 cup stick soya bean curd/foo chook (soaked and cut into small pieces)
1 tbs salt
2 tbs soya bean paste (taucu)
6 cloves garlic (pounded)
2 fresh chillies ( remove seeds and slice thinly)
1 capsicum (cubes)
3 petals of cabbage (cut into squares)
10 pcs baby carrot (cut into 4)
10 cherry tomato
2 tbs oil for frying



1) Heat oil and fry garlic. After a minute add in the soya bean paste. Fry for a minute until the garlic turned light brown.
2) Add carrot,cabbage,capsicum, Brussels sprout and shrimps. Stir for few minutes until the shrimps is cooked.
3) Black funges. shitake mushrooms, glass noodles, bean curds,chillies and tomato. Stir well and add the water. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes.
4) Add salt and a final stir, ready to serve.
